Removing Ink Stains - Some Questions and Answers
Many of our reades recommend hairspray or alcohol - then Oxy-bleach or hydrogen peroxide can be used. 'Stain Devils' are really good, they too work on the oxygen bleaching principle.
Answer #1: Most experts advise using
methylated spirits (methyl alcohol), followed by a wash. UK based readers are
fortunate for they can easily buy a "Stain Devil", a range of
chemical stain removers, one of which is designed to remove ballpoint stains.
They are available in the US. The US distributors are a
company called Carbona, www.carbona.com. In the UK www.dr-beckmann.
Answer#1: Ball point pen marks A few asked how to remove ball point pen from wood. WD-40, hair spray or
if all else fails try nail polish remover. I had to resort to the nail
polish remover to clean up a chair my daughter marked up with a pen. I
removed most, but not all of the marks. Areas where the pen gouged deeply
it lightened up, but some marks remained. Looks a lot better though!!
Test in an area that isn't too visible first to be sure it will not harm
the finish and clean it off with a damp sponge once done.
Hope this helps someone.

A: Stain Devils Hi, I notice in the
how to remove stains section, someone recommended "Stain Devil" and
implied that it was not readily available, except in the UK. If you ask your
search engine to find "Carbona", they are a pharmaceutical supply
company that advertise on the web, and have "Stain Devils" for all
manner of stains. P.J.Morant. -- Comment

A: Ball Point Pen Removal
Try using aerosol hair spray applied directly to the stain. ( I usually isolate the
stain with an old cloth) spray it, leave it overnite and launder as normal. Good Luck! The cheaper the hairspray the better -- J Langelaan

Q:
Ink spotted jeans. Hello, I need some help. I put a load of jeans into the dryer. When I took them out there
were ink spots all over the jeans. Low and behold there was an ink pen along with the
jeans. Is there a way to remove the ink spots? It's not like one or two places on the
pants. It's all over the pants and anywhere from a dot of ink to a blotch of ink. I hope
someone has a solution, as I really don't want to have to purchase everyone new jeans.
Thanks, Crystal. -- "zigmystr"

Q: Ballpoint ink stain in dryer Help!!
A loose ballpoint pen landed in my dryer and all over the clothes inside. I
have read some suggestions about removing ink from clothes but what about the
dryer itself. I feel as though I have ruined it and it is less than a year
old. Can you help? -- Dennis Adams
Q: Ink Removal
I have a problem. A pen exploded in my dryer and got all
over my clothes. I did not discover that this had happen until I went to take
the clothes out of the dryer. I know that hairspray may work if the ink is
still wet. My problem is that the ink is already dry. Any suggetions??? Any
help would be great! Thanks, -- "Joy" Reply

A: Removing Ink Stains. To remove ink stains from clothing, simply spray the dry fabric with hair
spray. Then treat with your regular pre-treating
spray, or blot with a damp cloth, and voila! It's
gone. I've even done this at work, after getting
an ink stain on white pants, while wearing them!!!! It
came off, too! As always, test a small spot,
first!

A: Ink on Clothing. Hi, when I was a waitress, we had to wear white aprons - which got daily
ink stains.
I sprayed the stains with plain old hairspray then threw in the wash
with regular detergent. It never failed for me!! Good luck. --

A: Ink Stains on Clothing. Hair spray works well, just spray on stain and wash but if stain does not come out do not put in dryer that will set the stain in.

Answer#3: Removing Ball Point Pen from Plastic Toys. Dear
John, My daughter had a very expensive baby doll once that she
scribbled all over in ball point pen. Nothing worked but after many
phone calls to the manufacturer, one very kind employee rang me back
with this tip. I didn’t actually believe that it would work, but
it did in fact completely remove the ball point pen from the doll. What
you need is “Oxy 10” pimple cream (I live in Australia so I
don’t know what the equivalent outside Australia would be –
some kind of 10 X strength pimple cream from the pharmacy I guess). You
then rub this cream all over the toy/doll and let it dry. Then coat it
again in the cream and put it out in the sun. The pen should just
vanish. As I said, it worked for me but you might want to try a small
area first.
I also used it when my daughter scribbled all over the plastic cover of
a school book and it worked as well. Best of luck. -- Karen
