Venomous Spider Bite
You or your child has been bitten by a spider and are usure of what to do. If you are in Australia or Brazil, and the victim is a child then rapid action is vital. It is possible for a funnel-web spider to kill a child in less than an hour. In most countries the risk is lower but if a child bitten by a black widow or brown recluse spider or similar then extreme measures need to be taken.
If you think the bite is from a spider then first arrange to get medical attention. Then wash the wound in soapy water and apply a dressing, an ice pack helps if available. Apply a tourniquet (not so tight that it seriously impedes blood flow) and try to keep the area of the bite above the rest of the body.
The number of worldwide spider bite fatalities is fewer than 200, however brain damage and disfigurement are much more common so even if you are not absolutely certain that the spider is poisonous then seek treatment.
Try to catch and kill the spider and take it with you to the hospital or clinic
