Q: Help for shrunken wool. Hi! I need help in returning a slightly shrunken wool sweater to its former shape. I remember a tip once given that suggested soaking the garment in a solution of cold water and vinegar(?). This would restore the original shape. Is this correct? Do you have any tips? Please advise -- "Vera" Reply (Ref:0074)

Q: Re: Shrunken Wool sweater Hi, I found the following query on your site: Q: Shrunk Sweater I accidentally shrunk a lambs wool sweater by washing it and drying it. The label says "dry clean only." Does anyone know if their is any way to undo the shrinkage and return the sweater to its original shape? I would appreciate any help. Reply (Ref:0359)

A: How to Un-shrink a wool sweater ... Hi – I was trying to figure out how to make a sweater smaller and came across this article on un-shrinking…http://ezinearticles.com/?How-To-Un-shrink-A-Wool-Sweater&id=9105 -- Michelle. 'Dave & Michelle' Sep 24 2006

A: Shrunken Sweater. Sometimes it happens to us all, in a careless moment we throw our brand new Aran sweater in the washing machine or dryer, shrinking them down about eight sizes and rendering it un-wearable to all but our children’s action man or Barbie Doll.

Luckily I have a contact with some inside knowledge on this matter so I asked my friend Mark Shenton owner of www.woolovers.com if there was a way to un-shrink a wool sweater, he started laughing even before I could finish my question.

Well people, today’s your lucky day, I have used the information this Shenton character gave me and I have now mastered the black art of wool un-shrinking and am here to share it with you.

Here we go….
When wool gets wet and warm, the fibres in the wool lock themselves together and don't want to let go, resulting in shrinkage (you can get wool warm or wet, but not both), which kind of makes washing wool garments a dangerous business.
To un-shrink the wool, soak the garment in warm water with a mild wool friendly soap for about 10 minutes. This unlocks the fibres in the wool. Then lay the garment out on some towels in a cool place. Stretch the garment out to its original dimensions. The stretching pulls the unlocked wool fibres away from each other. Once this is done relax and allow your wool garment to dry. The absence of heat from the drying process allows the wool fibres to set in place without locking together and shrinking the garment again.

That it, long story short: you will have a good as brand new, fully functional sweater again. -- Take Care, Al Nov 18 2006

Q: "Stwizler" My child vomited on our light blue carpet after eating a "Stwizler" that was all red. Please help with any suggestions. I tried "Resolve" carpet cleaner immediately but there is still a large stain. Thank you! -- The Benenati Household -- Reply  (Ref:0710)

A: We did a search for that odd word Stwizler on the internet but no success. The food dye must be a common one so it should be relatively easy to find a stain remover that does the trick. We are still asking around for you. If you can find out the name of the product a search on the web might get a response from the manufacturer of the candy -- E

A: Red Candy Stain. I think your problem is that the candy is spelled: TWIZZLER—no S. Good luck -- 'gurowitz' . Dec 15 2006

Answer Stwizler. I have had considerable success with Borax to take stains out of carpet. First dampen the area with warm vinegar in water (just a dash in a icecream dish half full of water). Then sprinkle the powdered borax over the area quite liberally. (I make a point of bying Borax that looks like talc in texture as there is also one which looks like dry fibeglass type slivers and I don't like that one). Leave the mix to dry and the stain just comes to the surface of the borax powder. Quite magic. Vacuum when dry. JM

A: Twizzler Carpet Stain. Try "Awesome" from the 99 cent store. Use it full strength. It is very mild and very little odor. My grand-daughter got red lipstick on my bar stools and I sprayed 'Awesome' on it and used a damp cloth. Never knew the stain even existed. Good luck. -- Fran Abbott 4/07/08

A: Red Carpet Stain. Buy Spot Shot carpet stain removal, usually available at Walmart stores. This has removed red Kool-aid stains from our carpet. Test on another area of carpet that may not be as noticeable to test for any color change to carpet before using on the stain. Good luck. -- Michelle DiCarlo' Apr 28 2006

Q: Aluminum Water Bottles Safe?  Hi Nancy, I just read your comments about aluminum and am interested in your list of household items that contain aluminum. Would you please email it to me? I'm also wondering if you would help me with some questions. I'm interested in purchasing an aluminum sports bottle, but am concerned about  aluminum being bad for health. Do you know if storing drinking water in aluminum bottles is safe? What about storing other types of liquids (not acidic ones like orange juice, but what about tea, for example)? And it occurred to me -- if I washed the aluminum bottle with soap and water, would it  release aluminum into the drinking water that I put in later? I understand you may not have the answers to these questions -- I would just be glad for any information you can give me on the safety of using  aluminum bottles for storing drinking water. Thank you, -- TMC Reply  30 Oct 2003

Question #2: Aluminium Bottle. Hi, I also using an aluminium sports bottle and found this website. I am wondering if you have gotten an answer to your question on whether or not it is good for your health?

When I take fitness classes I had been using plastic like everyone else but want a healthier choice. Thanks, enjoy the day! - Patt. -- Reply. 8/01/08

A: Aluminium Water Bottles:- The better ones seem to be more of a fashion accessory than anything else. To render them non-toxic they have to be coated inside and this is done by lining with epoxy (a pretty toxic plastic) or ceramic (friable) so why not stick to a properly aged plastic one; by aged I mean one that has had enough time for the majority of the outgassing of toxins to have taken place. Certainly claiming that aluminium bottles are safer than plastic bottles needs questioning -- Darren Hoffman, 16/02/07
